Rick and Morty: Forever, Darkwing Duck hits bookstores — and more.

I went ahead and wrote the last Rick And Morty comic.

At least, the last one from Oni Press, the publisher that has held the license for the past ten years and put out many, MANY Rick And Morty comics by creators like Kyle Starks, Tini Howard, Marc Ellerby, Tom Fowler, Zander Cannon, Jim Zub, Nick Filardi, CJ Cannon, Jake Black, Jody Houser, Meg Casey, the team of Alex Firer and Fred C. Stresing both together and separately — honestly too many to list here. But only one writer was so unapologetically awful that they could be trusted to destroy this comics line once and for all, and I was not a hard man to find.

Artist, Troy Little, was probably a harder man to find, because he is enormously talented and therefore enormously busy. Together, along with the whole Oni Press gang, we bring you the epic 48 page series finale Rick And Morty: Forever. If you’ve been watching this space (or following the comics) you know that myself, Jarrett Williams, Alessandro Santoro and company have been torturing Rick and Morty through two epic, cosmic, universe-spanning (and universe-fighting) miniseries: Rick And Morty Vs. The Universe and Rick And Morty: The End. So what comes after The End? It’s like the blue guy says, “Nothing ever ends.” And then he showed his penis and became god. Via Oni Press:

Darkwing Duck: Year One, Part One

The only downside to writing Darkwing Duck stories in a print medium is that you don’t get to hear the theme song, which is why I’ve been trying to get into your house at night, so I can personally soothe and thrill you with it. St. Canard’s Daring Duck of Mystery is BACK in a new, old adventure that flashes back to Darkwing’s secret (and possibly totally made up) origins. In our second-ever installment of The Secret History of Darkwing Duck, we learn how Darkwing became the world’s greatest master of disguise?

Or did he, because — funny story on this one. I came up with this premise based on a misremembering of the lyrics of the theme song:

The master of surprise

Who's that cunning mind behind

The shadowy disguise?

At no point do the lyrics actually say “Master of Disguise,” and in fact, are only referring to his day-to-day costume as a “disguise” with a cunning mind behind it. A fact, gently pointed out to me by none other than Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones, who has been enormously helpful on this project (as you can imagine) as well as drawing covers for every issue (collect them all).

But once you accidentally hear “Master of Disguise” and it sticks, it’s a great excuse to write a face-swapping showdown pitting Darkwing against none other than rarely-seen fan favorite villain Camille Chameleon — in a Prestigious turn-of-the-century setting that evokes bloodthirsty rivalry between stage magicians. Might be a good idea for a movie someday.

Remember those one-shots I mentioned? This comic is really special. Scripted by my friend and one of my favorite comics creators Jody Houser and co-written by me, Summer of Love is Jody’s first Rick and Morty script and according to Jody, her first comedy script, which is unreal and intimidating because it turned out very, very funny.

Darkwing Duck #5

Very excited for him (and us) to be back. Our Darkwing Duck comics return to shelves this month, and this one is full on Saturday Morning Cartoon gimmick issue. On the train to San Diego Comic-Con last year, I was sitting near some acquaintances who work in animation as they talked about classic tropes. They mentioned — in this order — shrinking and getting sucked into cyberspace. And I thought to myself, “Welp, that’s issue four and five.” Dead to rights. But for a character with a particular focus on getting dangerous can you think of a more dangerous place right now than … The Internet?!

If you’ve heard me on one of the double-digit podcasts I’ve invited myself on to discuss this — this is a big deal for me. Darkwing Duck is of my favorite characters/properties of all time, a brain-molding introduction to the pulp and superhero genres that hit me like a bolt of lightning at exactly the right age. And most exciting to me from a writing perspective, a rogues gallery as diverse and iconic as any in comics.

Starting with a new #1 from Dynamite, every issue of the new Darkwing Duck is an episodic adventure, designed to feel like a new or “lost” episode of Darkwing Duck (1991). A show I’ve been internalizing so long and deeply that these scripts feel like they’re leaking out of the pores in my bones.

Interior pencils/inks are by the phenomenal team of Brandt & Stein, who I first came to love via their art for the dystopian satire Crowded (2018 - 2022), and who provided the cover and some interior illustrations for my (insanely named) book, DC Christmas Carols: We Wish You a Harley Christmas (2020). The (stunning) colors come from Dearbhla Kelly, with Fabio Amelia on letters.

Probably most exciting to longtime fans (myself included) is that our variant cover artists include Darkwing Duck creator TAD STONES, who has also generously provided his invaluable insights on the characters and what makes them work and endure. Speaking of geeking out, we also have a #1 Variant from the Mark Bagley (of Spider-Man fame, Ultimate Spider-Man fame, and beyond), and yet more variants from Ciro Cangialosi and Nicoletta Baldari — whose work I’ve been describing as a Darkwing Duck Tarot Card Deck in the making, which absolutely should exist.

Hi, all.

Very quickly, because I’m in currently in Deadlineopolis (play on Megalopolis), but this is important and time-sensitive. Holiday time sensitive. Is “Holiday Time” a phrase? There’s no way to know something like that.

If you’re reading this, you probably have some loose idea of who I am, and what I do, and may have noticed I write a lot of holiday stories — like Rugrats: C is for Chanukah with Cullen Crawford, Santa’s Husband with Ashley Quach, and Chronicle Books’ insanely named DC Christmas Carols: We Wish You a Harley Christmas — for which I rewrote a number of classic Christmas carols to be about the heroes and villains of the D.C. Which is all to say, this all becomes a bit of a beat once editors know you like doing holiday stuff — and the people who do, I’ve found, really do. So, for the approval of the Midnight Society (You probably think that’s for Halloween right, but Christmas also has a midnight — that’s when when Santa comes — and Hanukkah has eight midnights, so educate yourself) — I’ve written/co-written FOR YOU TO BUY AND READ two new holiday comics for 2024 on sale right now.
